Former King County public defender Jesse Salomon is the best choice for state senator in Legislative District 32, which includes parts of Shoreline and Lynnwood.
Jesse Salomon, a former King County public defender and current Shoreline City Council member, is the best choice for state Senate in the 32nd Legislative District.
Incumbent state Sen. Maralyn Chase was first appointed to the House in 2002 and has been a senator since 2010.
While Chase’s service is appreciated, Salomon offers new leadership that the Legislature needs. He brings expertise in criminal justice and challenges facing local government. Both are Democrats.
Salomon’s caseload during a decade of public defense included many people struggling with homelessness, mental illness and addiction. Addressing these often overlapping challenges should be a top priority for the Legislature, and Salomon’s depth and thoughtfulness would be a great asset.
Also running is Republican James Wood, a Seattle fire lieutenant and former Navy rescue swimmer emphasizing the need for law and order.
Wood’s public service is admirable — you’d be glad to see him in an emergency — but his hard-line politics won’t help the Legislature make progress on delicate issues such as sensible gun control and abolishing the death penalty.
Affirming that it’s time for change in the 32nd, Chase used much of an interview to lecture about industrial automation.
Defending a rotten bill last session that undermined the state Public Records Act, drew statewide condemnation and was vetoed, Chase questioned whether newspapers defending the act in court are “reporting the news or creating” it.
Salomon was “appalled” by that bill and said legislators complaining about the burden of public records should have consulted with local governments that have figured it out.
Vote for Salomon for 32nd District senator.
